Swimming in Lake Constance

Cycling Lake Constance - Swimming in Lake Constance

The sun is burning on your shoulders, sweat is dropping from your face, your jersey is drenched, your saddle is getting more and more uncomfortable. What could possibly be better now than diving into the refreshingly cool depths of the lake, letting yourself be carried by the gentle waves or relaxing in the shade of a large tree?

Lake Constance is perfectly equipped for such endeavours: its water fulfils drinking water criteria and is the main supply thereof as far north as Stuttgart. Every village along the lake’s shore has at least one dedicated swimming area and swimming is also permitted at all public spots along the shoreline - of which there are many.

In general, one should note that the northern area of the lake tends to have steep slopes close to the shores and is thus not really suitable for small children, whereas the southern shore, the lower lake (“Untersee”) and the Höri peninsula offer large, flat areas, but therefore tend to be infested with algae if temperatures are very high.

Swimming in Lake Constance - Badhütte Rorschach

You will find swimming in one of the fully preserved historical lake resorts especially enjoyable: We recommend either the Mili in Bregenz, the Badhütte in Rorschach or the Rheinbad in Constance.

Please note: If a storm warning is issued - for example during heavy “föhn” wind, orange flashing lights come on in all harbours. If this is the case, you should avoid swimming on the open lake.
